ItemFindings from the Mellon Metadata Harvesting Initiative(LYRASIS, 2003) Hagedorn, Kat; Halbert, Martin; Kaczmarek, JoanneFindings are reported from four projects initiated through funding by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2001 to explore applications of metadata harvesting using the OAI-PMH. Metadata inconsistencies among providers have been encountered and strategies for normalization have been studied. Additional findings concerning harvesting are format conflicts, harvesting problems, provider system development, and questions regarding the entire cycle of metadata production, dissemination, and use (termed metadata gardening, rather than harvesting). Mellon Foundation, the project staff at AmericanSouth.org is to “coordinate specific evaluations of AmericanSouth.org from the perspectives of … scholars and other users.” The types of testing to be conducted were specified as including “evaluation and usability studies.” Item2005 SOLINET Educational Services Survey(SOLINET (now LYRASIS), 2005)SOLINET conducted a survey to collect information from members about their needs and interests in regard to continuing education and professional development. SOLINET asked about preferences for course topics, class delivery methods, and communications, and wanted to know what factors are important to you when making a decision to register (or not) for a course. ItemThe State of Libraries at Historically Black Colleges and Universities(LYRASIS (formerly SOLINET), 2005-09) Idleman, Lynda; Nyberg, SandraHow do the levels of support for and services from HBCU libraries compare to those at other academic institutions? To develop a baseline comparison, the HBCU Library Alliance and the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET) undertook an assessment of the state of libraries at HBCUs using data collected by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) through its biennial Academic Libraries Survey (ALS). Funded by the Training and Technical Assistance Program of the Library Statistics Program at the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS), The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and SOLINET, the assessment project is part of a broader initiative at the HBCU Library Alliance to strengthen HBCU libraries by integrating them into campus programs for teaching and learning. The information in this report can help HBCU libraries, individually and as a group, identify needs and priorities for strengthening library services and campus educational programs. It also provides documentation that can be used to examine and potentially influence public policy issues. In addition to this report, each of the HBCU libraries in the data set received a set of individualized tables comparing the statistics from its own survey response to the responses of peer groups. The Summit is part of the Gulf Coast Libraries Project, funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and administered by SOLINET. The invitation-only Summit was for teams from the affected libraries in Louisiana and Mississippi. This report is a summary of that summit. ItemThe State of Libraries at Historically Black Colleges and Universities(LYRASIS, 2011-04) Askew, Consuella; Phoenix, SandraThis report examines a total of 193 academic libraries, 94 historically black college and university libraries (HBCUs), and 99 non-HBCUs, using data collected through the 2008 Academic Libraries Survey (ALS) conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The ALS data set also integrates data from the Integrated postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) pertaining to institutional characteristics. In this report, the following areas of library services and operations are reviewed: outlets and staff, expenditures, collections, technology, and library services and information literacy. ItemToward a Cloud Collection: Designing a National Framework to Manage Monographs(LYRASIS, 2011-04-01) Cherubini, TimothyLibraries already are collaboratively managing journals, newspapers, and government documents but have not yet focused on print monograph collections, which present complex challenges. A collaborative model for managing monographs would safeguard unique materials, permit better use of space in libraries, and advance current library practices in other ways. LYRASIS and its partners, the Center for Research Libraries, the California Digital Library, and the Committee on Institutional Cooperation will define the characteristics of a national, collaborative model for managing print monographs and identify issues that need testing or research. Organizations from throughout the U.S. will be invited to assist in formulation of the collaborative framework. ItemA Report on the Return of Gulf Coast Libraries in Mississippi and Louisiana for the Gulf Coast Libraries Project(LYRASIS, 2011-05) Burger, Alan; Burger, LeslieIn 2005, over 21 public libraries along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Mississippi were destroyed, seriously damaged and unable to open in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Library leaders in both states quickly realized that libraries had a key role to play in the storm recovery effort and that the resources required to reopen and rebuild all of the destroyed facilities were beyond their local and state capacity. By January 2006, efforts on the part of the state libraries in Louisiana and Mississippi and LYRASIS had led to the formation of an advisory committee composed of local library leaders, individuals with experience in library disaster recovery, and others to determine what would be needed to restore public library service along the Gulf Coast. The group contacted the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with a request for funding to help save and restore 21 of the libraries that had been seriously destroyed during the storm. Shortly after the American Library Association Conference in New Orleans in June 2006 the Gates Foundation announced that they would provide $12.2 million to support the rebuilding effort. This gift launched the Gulf Coast Libraries Project. Led by the Fenway Libraries Online (FLO) office, the Electronic Resource Management Task Force, and eventually the FLO CORAL Development Committee (FCDC), members of the FLO community participated in system trials, product evaluation, implementation and enhancements, all in the pursuit of bringing order to the chaos that is electronic resource management. Along the way, we also learned a great deal about evaluating, implementing and supporting open source software and about participating in open source communities. In response to what was learned during that meeting about needs, resources, barriers and opportunities, LYRASIS, one of the participants in the convening, proposed a planning project to design a program to improve and increase emergency preparedness within the performing arts sector. This White Paper provides a summary of what was learned during the planning grant project. It is a snapshot of the state of emergency preparedness among performing arts organizations in the U.S. This snapshot forms the basis for recommendations to improve readiness that will be piloted through an implementation project during 2017-2019.
